When I was young my family would spend every Christmas at my grandparents house. All of the cousins and aunts and uncles would gather for a magical season filled with delicious baked goods, presents, elves, and the obligatory visit from Santa. When we moved across the country the Christmas visits stopped but I still spent summers with my grandparents. I am sure that this was so my grandparents wouldn’t feel too left out and not at all to pawn off their third (oopsie) child. Right, mom??
All kidding aside my grandparents took me everywhere. My Papa travelled occasionally for his jobs and I would tag along on epic roadtrips that crisscrossed the country. Our roadtrips consisted of Nat King Cole, singing “Deep in the Heart of Texas” at the top of our lungs, LOTS of chex mix, and me reading in the back seat. How I managed the last part, I will never know, I can barely ride in the car without feeling car sick anymore. I guess I used up all my non-carsick mojo on those trips.
In between visits my Papa would write me stories. He would write me about a stubborn little pig named Humphrey that went on lots of adventures, got into some trouble, but who’s positive attitude and good intentions always won out in the end. Often, when things would go terribly awry you could hear his wife Emma exclaim “OH HUMPHrey!!” Where Humphrey was a dreamer, as well as somewhat clumsy and impetuous, Emma was steadfast and logical, working together with Humphrey to save the day!
The “Emma” part of me went to University and got degrees in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. However baking has always been my “Humphrey” dream, so when I finally got the chance to throw caution to the wind and follow that dream, I couldn’t think of a better namesake.
